Cell Press Cover
Following the white rabbit for a very important update!
Illustrating to celebrate a new development in Neuroscience.
I worked with the Crowley Lab and Stellate Communications to create two illustrated cover art options for Cell Press. The ask was to create an illustration that elevated the Crowley Lab’s paper on how the hormone somatostatin (SST) promotes taking a riskier path that has the potential to have a higher reward. The options needed to illustrate this idea in a way that was quick to understand and engaging for viewers.
For one option I explored the idea of Alice being pulled down the rabbit hole by SST. I played around with different layouts to see what was the balance of scientific elements and Wonderland references. The color and stylization of this piece pushed the contrast of the safe path versus the risky path. I enjoyed being able to represent something so scientific in such a fun and approachable way.
For the second option I explored the idea of SST pulling the strings, and pushing the subject into a high-risk/high-reward situation, like performing on stage.
I was art-directed by the team at Stellate Communications to refine the sketch. The paper cut style was chosen here to add depth and dramatize the weight of the decision to take the risky path.
