Scientific approach
I created a series of illustrations for the O'Connell Lab, to accompany their research page. I started by concepting what each illustration would be based on their copy, as well as sharing style options. Once the concepts and styles were chosen, I started with sketches. Once the sketches are client-approved, I get started on the vectors.
Visual Metaphors
I enjoyed concepting for this project because the illustrations go beyond literal scientific depictions. By using metaphors and playing with negative shapes, I captured the broader ideas behind the research. A lot of research labs can look the same, with data and graphs, but here I was able to help them stand out with custom illustrations. They not only brighten up the site, but they also get a complex message across to their audience.
